LAWRENCE - Lewy Baez-Troncoso may not be the biggest kid on Central Catholic's roster, but he sure as heck hits like he is.

The 5-foot-8, 195-pound senior laid some monster hits, was in on a pair of sacks and otherwise fueled a stout Raiders defense that held visiting Lowell to just 97 total yards in a 40-0 blowout Friday night.

Around the Central looker room, Baez-Troncoso is known as the "hype man."

"I try to get everyone going," smiled Baez-Troncoso. "When the mood gets down, I try to get everyone fired up."

Central (3-2) set the tone early, driving 81 yards on eight plays and scoring on a Jared Silverio 1-yard run. After a forced three-and-out, the Raiders made it 14-0 when Aidan Gordon hit 6-foot-4 Jermaine Wiggins for a 16-yard strike in the back corner of the end zone.

On Lowell's next possession, Baez-Troncoso came up with a huge sack that forced another punt.

"This is his first year starting and he's done a good job," said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos. "He set the tone on the kickoff team with some of his hits. And he played really well at linebacker tonight. He plays hard, he plays with a lot of emotion."

Central took a 24-0 lead into halftime after Silverio's second rushing TD of the game, this one from a yard out, and a 26-yard field goal from Nick Mazzie. The Raiders held Lowell (1-3) to just 65 yards in the first half, and only played better in the second.

Anthony Caggianelli had a sack, and Chris Jones came up with an interception in the second half.

"I felt great," said Baez-Troncoso. "I knew we needed this win. The defense played really well tonight. The whole team wanted this win."

Central quickly built a 40-0 lead in the third quarter after a safety and two 1-yard TD runs from Caggianelli and JJ Mercuri.

The Raiders went with a two-quarterback offense, switching each drive between Silverio and Gordon. Both played well. Silverio did most of his damage on the ground, while Gordon threw for 95 yards on 6 of 11 passing and a touchdown.

"They both do different things," said Adamopoulos. "I thought they both ran the ball well, I thought their decision-making was solid and they both made passes when we needed it.

"They pull for each other and they're both doing a nice job for us."

After starting the season 1-2, Central has won its last two games by a combined score of 73-14. Up next for the Raiders is a huge matchup against Methuen (4-1) Friday at 7 p.m.

Asked if he thinks his team is starting to click at the right time, Baez-Troncoso said simply but confidently: "Yes."
