Pinkerton's girls cross country team couldn't defend its New ENgland cross country title Saturday at Derryfield Park, but the Astros did reach their goal of being the top team from New Hampshire.
In a meet won impressively by Champlain Valley from Vermont, the Astros came in eighth out of 28 teams. And underclassmen led the way.
Running under tough conditions of wind and mud, junior Meghan Cross was the top Astro finisher, coming in 52nd while a pair of freshmen, Riley Sweeney and Mariesa Preble, were 60th and 66th. It was a strong race by Sweeney and the first time all year she was the No. 2 runner.
Senior Ciara April and sophomore Molly McGaffigan rounded out Pinkerton's top five.
For Sanborn, Avery Scully finished 94th. Sophomore Kate Wiser of Pomperaug, Conn., was the individual winner, in 18:04,1 with impressive Merrimack Valley freshman Sophia Reynolds taking second in 18:42.4.
