For the third straight year, pregame Georgetown-Manchester Essex talk centers around the QBs: Royals senior Joe Esposito and Hornets standout Pat Orlando.

This time around, though, the matchup won’t decide the Commonwealth Small title. Manchester, 10-0, already has that sewn up, while 8-1 Georgetown has moved on to the Cape Ann League.

The Royals are in a title hunt, needing the Amesbury-Newburyport outcome up I-95 to fall in its favor — that is an Amesbury win with the Port scoring 26 points or better.

First things first, though.

The Royals will have to bounce back from the recent one-point loss to Newburyport, which would have given them the title.

If the Royals’ minds start to wander, coach Matt Bouchard only has to remind them of last fall when Manchester beat Georgetown in the winner-take-all meeting for the playoff berth.

“The Monday after Thanksgiving, these guys were back to work in the weight room,” said Bouchard. “They didn’t like the way last year went, obviously. That should be all the motivation they need.”

The quarterbacks aren’t the only marquee players. Running back Jaymie Spears (7 TDs) and Anthony Conte (7 TDs) complement Esposito. Brian Ciccone (17 TDs, 139 points) is a force for the Hornets.

This is the teams’ 49th meeting, 18th on Thanksgiving.
