MALDEN — Bryan Trickett needed just five plays to control the game.

The senior scored on three of the five times he touched the ball to lead Whittier to its second straight win, a 37-20 victory over Mystic Valley last night.

“Yeah, that’s a typical Bryan Trickett night,” said Whittier coach Kevin Bradley.

The 2007 Eagle-Tribune All-Star tallied 71 rushing yards on just four carries. Two of those were touchdowns of 31 and 35 yards. Quarterback Dillon Ryan (8-for-14, 97 yards) also connected with him for the 3-yard touchdown pass. He hardly played in the second half, with the Wildcats holding a big lead.

“Bryan never complains, never asks for the ball or looks at stats,” said Bradley. “You can see how classy a person he is, and it’s contagious. He’s a role model for the younger kids. We’re so proud of him.”

Ryan also stood out, spreading the field with a mix or short and long passes. He recorded completions of 34 and 20 yards to go with a half a dozen intermediate passes.

“I’m real proud of my quarterback,” Bradley said. “He stepped up tonight. What I like about him is his leadership out there. You can see the three-sport athlete in him; he made some juke moves that he would have made on the basketball court and some nice side-arm throws that come from his being a good pitcher.”

On defense, Don Leighton (two interceptions) and the rest of the Whittier secondary terrorized Mystic Valley quarterback Artie Hoffman, who was held to 3 yards passing (1 for 6).

“He was reading the quarterback and executing all of his plays well. He’s not afraid to go to the ball - every time the ball goes up in there, it’s like it’s his,” said Trickett.

Mystic Valley got all of their scoring done in the fourth quarter with Whittier’s subs in. Whittier improved to 3-1 overall.
