CHARLESTOWN – It didn’t take long for Whittier Tech’s Tyler Page to deliver a haymaker yesterday. On the game’s second play, he rumbled up the middle for 38 yards, knocking over several Charlestown High defenders and a referee – the latter by accident of course.

“I tried to juke him. I did what I could,” Page said with a smile. “I said sorry after.”

It was a sign of things to come. The Wildcats smothered the Townies from wire to wire, running away with a season-opening 32-12 victory.

“We pushed the sled all day long,” Page said. “It was a great way to get the year (started) off.”

Page (8-96) scored two touchdowns, including a 28-yarder, as Whittier piled up 206 rushing yards on 34 carries.

“Not only does it take the other team to slow him down,” coach Kevin Bradley said of Page, “it takes the official too.”

The 5-foot-11, 179-pound senior running back, Bradley said, has developed into a big-play threat.

“Now he knows how to get out of the pile and find something,” Bradley said.

Several backs fueled the Whittier attack. A.J. Brown (8-33), Bryan Trickett (5-18) and Carlos Candelario (3-17) were all effective.

“The thing about us,” Bradley said, “is that you can’t key on one of them.”

After Page’s 38-yard sprint set up a first-and-goal, Trickett’s bruising 8-yard TD run and Candelario’s conversion scamper put Whittier up 8-0 at 8:14 in the first. Page’s 3-yard score later in the quarter put the game out of reach.

Quarterback Dillon Ryan (3 for 6, 65 yards, INT) didn’t have to go to the air much, but made the most of his opportunities. He threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a pretty 29-yard toss to Josh Oliver in the second quarter.

There were plenty of highlights as the afternoon wore on. Senior Damian Colman made a bone-crunching sack of talented Townies quarterback Stephen Montissol. To top it off, 6-4, 266-pound senior lineman Corey Chabuz (2-5) got a chance to play the William “Refrigerator” Perry role as the clock wound down.

“Coming out, you don’t really know what to expect,” Bradley said. “I was pleased with all aspects of the game.”
