HAVERHILL — The first game of their own tournament pretty much summed up the Hillies season.
Despite another outing of good pitching and solid defense Haverhill was unable to come up with key hits when needed, dropping a 3-0 decision to Danvers in Thursday's opening round of the Second Annual Hillie Classic at Trinity Stadium.
The loss was the fourth in the past five games and the season's fifth shutout suffered by the Hillies (7-10). They have scored two runs or fewer in nine of the losses. Against Danvers (14-4), they stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings.
"That has been (the case)," Haverhill coach Paul Sartori said referring to the lack of clutch hitting. "I think you have to keep this all in perspective. They're young kids who are working their backsides off as best they possibly can. We've run into some good pitching and run into some good teams."
On Thursday, the Hillies ran into a pitcher who kept the ball on the ground while needing only 70 pitches for the game. Teddy Vaillancourt didn't register a walk or a strikeout while allowing four hits. Of the 21 outs, 18 came via the ground ball. Shortstop Anthony Olszak cleanly handled all 10 of the balls hit his way. Vaillancourt retired each of the final 11 batters he faced.
"No, that isn't what I expected (of Vaillancourt)," Danvers coach Roger Day said. "Last game he pitched, he was up and got hit pretty hard. But right off the bat, he was keeping the ball down and we got a ton of ground balls. We got some good rhythm going."
Haverhill had runners on second base in the first (Andres Castillo), second (Joe Santoro), third (Michael Roy) and fourth (Zac Durso) and no more than one out each time. But none of the Hillies advanced further.
Zac Durso took the loss, allowing six hits, walking four and striking out one while going the distance. The Hillies also received solid defensive plays from right fielder Dallas Vaughan, who made a diving catch that stranded a runner on third in the fourth, and a diving stop by second baseman Nick Skafas that ended the fifth.
Nick Raimo drove in all three runs for Danvers on a third-inning sacrifice fly and a two-run double in the fifth.
"The positive thing is the kids aren't giving up," Sartori said. "You see how well they're playing defensively. They're working hard out there and making the plays."
In Thursday's first game played in the Pena Division Austin Prep defeated Tewksbury 12-3 and will face Danvers for the title at 3 p.m. Saturday.
"We have Tewksbury on Saturday (10 a.m.), and we'll be ready to play," said Sartori, who's squad has four games remaining. We need to win one to get back on track."
In today's Karelis Division action at Trinity Stadium, Lawrence plays North Andover at 4 p.m. followed by Methuen vs. Nashoba Regional in the 7 p.m. nightcap.
