NEWBURYPORT — Lawrence came to Newburyport poised to shut down a quarterback widely believed to be the top passer in the Cape Ann League.
In Lawrence’s 37-23 victory over Newburyport at World War Memorial Stadium, the Lancers (2-1) had a quarterback of their own emerge as an MVP candidate in his own right.
Lawrence’s 5-7, 160-pound quarterback Ramon Heredia completed 16 of 22 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns, winning his dual with Joe Clancy (11 of 25, 150 yards, 3 touchdowns, 3 interceptions).
Heredia orchestrated a near-perfect offensive attack, adding 10 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown to complement Devin Montanez, who carried the load with 16 rushes for 146 yards and a touchdown.
“We had (214) passing yards, but Devin gave us the balance we needed to be efficient,” Lawrence coach Mike Yameen said. “I really think Devin is one of the best all-around backs in the area.”
Montanez, who added three receptions for 39 yards, slipped through countless tackles in the Newburyport secondary. Fourteen of his 16 runs went for at least five yards.
Montanez said, “We have so many good skill players on this team, but it’s because of the guys blocking up front.”
The Clippers (0-3) allowed at least 35 points for the second consecutive week; last week they fell 35-32 to Saugus. They have forced only two punts in the last nine quarters.
Lawrence jumped to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on two Heredia passing touchdowns. He completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Demetri Brown (7 receptions, 63 yards) with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. Julio Valentin added a 27-yard touchdown reception with 1:23 left in the first quarter.
Clancy pulled Newburyport to within a score on a 40-yard touchdown strike to Derek Freeman with 5:02 remaining before the half. Lawrence took away any semblance of momentum on its next drive, which Heredia concluded with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Brown. That gave Lawrence a 22-8 lead just 6.2 seconds before halftime.

SATURDAY 10/4/08: By Hector Longo STAFF WRITER AMESBURY — After rolling up 115 points in three straight wins to open the season, the Amesbury High football team used this week to show the Cape Ann small suitors to their throne that they can play a little defense, too. The Indians, now 4-0, pounced on four Lawrence High turnovers to win going away last night at Landry Stadium, 27-7, in their final non-CAL small tuneup. "Feels great right now, hopefully, we'll keep it up," said Indians two-way standout Jesse Burrell. The junior picked off a pair of passes and pounded the life out of Lawrence with 122 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. For good measure, the 185-pounder caught three balls for 31 more yards and the Indians first TD of the night. "We were worried sick with how explosive they are. I thought we did a pretty good job holding them. They can just score so fast," said coach Thom Connors. "In the second half, we just threw (Jesse) at them with that inside trap. He's a real hard runner. He had huge yards for us, and that's just the weapon that he is." Lawrence simply never got untracked offensively, despite averaging nearly 10 yards per rush. Both of Burrell's picks were crushing, with Lawrence knocking on the doorstep. "I just went into my zone, doing what I was coached to do," said Burrell, who actually had a potential third pickoff zip through his hands. "I thought they'd be very good in the passing game but our defense came to play." Jared Flannigan put the Indians up 7-0 with the rollout throw to Burrell, capping the opening 69-yard TD march with the seven-yard hookup. Flannigan then made it 13-0 in the second with an eight-yard rollout score. Lawrence's one flicker of life lasted merely seconds. Ramon Heredia hit completions of 22, 20 and 13 to set himself up on a one-yard touchdown plunge with only 1:30 left in the half. But gamebreaker Kevin Johnston squelched the celebration on the visitors' sideline with an 88-yard kick return for the score. The two-point run by Flannigan made it 21-7 at the break, and Connors made the call to Burrell in the closer role after intermission. He responded with 10 runs for 85 yards after the break to seal it. Next week, the intensity hitches up a notch as the Indians travel to Georgetown Saturday for the commencement of the CAL small schedule.
