For one day, Whittier was definitely no longer second best Saturday.
The Wildcats, who have come close before, captured the title at the Dan Gionet Memorial Tournament in Pelham, crowning three champions and easily outpacing runner-up Bedford-Minuteman.
Earning titles and pinning their way through the tournament were 113-pounder Angel Alicea, 195-pounder Andrew Buzzell and 220-pounder Sal Fonzo. Buzzell defeated teammate Mkemjika Chiapo in the finals. Also finishing second was 160-pounder Shaun Mears while Andre Caraballo took third at heavyweight.
"We were missing some kids but the guys really wrestled hard," said Whittier coach Harry Takesian.
