NORTH ANDOVER- It's hard to be upbeat after a 8-2 defeat at the hands of B.C High, but Central Catholc head coach Mike Jankowski is confident with what he saw on the ice from his team.
"Overall we played pretty decently," said Jankowski. "Unfortunately we got the two majors and we were shorthanded for eight minutes. That's a good portion of the game in which you leave a team like that opportunities which they capitilized on."
B.C. scored four of their goals during the eight minutes of ice time Central was in the box for majors.
Sunday's game was a consolation matchup in the Peter Frates Tournament at Merrimack College.
Jayson Dobay started the scoring in the first for B.C. when he deflected a wrister from teammate Blake Graham off of a faceoff past Central goalie Matthew Pasquale. Pasquale had previously made a blocker save followed by a sprawling glove save to force the faceoff, but could not locate the tip through all of the traffic.
Down only 2-0 after one period, Central's Sean Brown scored a power play goal just 90 seconds into the second frame. The two teams played up and down hockey for the next five minutes until a boarding penalty put Central down a man for four minutes.
Senior Kayser Raei scored twice for B.C. during the man advantage to put the score at 4-1 heading into the third period.
Central returned their six suspended players to action, which included last years starting goalie Patrick Schena.
"I saw that we're a long ways away from what we want to be in March," said Jankowski. "It's a dynamic move. We've had some success with the guys that are there, so getting guys back into the mix makes things a little difficult."
Schena saw some ice time in the third period after Pasquale was pulled. Pasquale has done well stepping in as the team's goalie this season, only allowing two goals in four conference games. He made 21 saves in Sunday's contest, but was peppered by B.C on the power play.
Schena made 9 saves and allowed 2 goals in thirteen minutes of action.
Coach Jankowski said it was "too soon" to decide who would be starting in net for Central moving forward.
Jake Wise scored his seventh goal of the season on a breakaway opportunity late in the third. Wise made a nifty left-to-right move followed by a backhand shot to beat B.C goalie Brandon Payzant top shelf.
Next for Central Catholic is a home matchup against Austin Prep Saturday at 6 pm.
