Swampscott (5-9) would like to get into the state tournament by finishing .500 or better. But since the Division 3 squad plays enough games against higher division clubs, they could qualify by finishing .500 or better against fellow D-3 opponents.
Even that, though, is easier said than done. With losses to Winthrop and Saugus already in the books, the Big Blue face a must-win against the Winthrop Vikings tonight. They'll have ace Hunter Gordon, who beat Peabody last week, on the hill for the task.
Swampscott will then need to beat Saugus Friday and knock off Cardinal Spellman (May 24) in its season finale to finish 3-2 in Division 3 action and clinch a berth. Of course, that would give them eight wins overall and a legit shot at qualifying the old fashioned way as well.
