Windham sophomore McKee wins D2 state title

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – For the fourth straight year, the New Hampshire Division 2 golf champion resides in Windham.

James McKee dominated the field with a 36-hole 72-73 – 145, three-over par and good for a whopping 10-shot victory at Pease Golf Club.

“To see guys like Connor Greenleaf and Nick Fairweather, what they’ve done and how they’ve gone on to play in college, it’s pretty nice to be mentioned in that company,” said McKee, the sophomore who won the New Hampshire Junior Amateur this summer.

McKee held a four-shot advantage coming into Saturday morning’s championship round. He battled the cold and early rain as much as any real challenger.

“I felt pretty comfortable coming in,” said McKee. “I knew with the weather the way it was, I had to be patient and I would be fine. Play my game and I have a pretty solid chance.”

Teammate Jack Grubbs, who began the day tied for second at 76, shot an 82 for the Jags, who were second in the team championship on Thursday.

Windham’s Chad DeSautels was the only other area qualifier, in 24th with a 84-90 – 174.

Area D1 qualifiers 11th

In the Division 1 State Individual Meet at Concord Country Club, Winnacunnet’s Ryan Quinn won in a playoff after scoring 150 over 36 holes.

The two area qualifiers finished tied for 11th at 163. Timberlane’s Michael Scipione made a big Day 2 move, closing with an 85-78. Pinkerton’s Marshall Halpin was consistent over two days, scoring an 82-81.
