Christian Monserrat did his usual and then some and freshman Darius Franklin began his high school career in impressive fashion as Methuen finished third in the 15-team Oliver Ames Invitational.
Monserrat, who entered the season with a 155-2 record and is a defending New England champion, won all four of his matches with first-period pins at 138 pounds and was named tournament Outstanding Wrestler and Franklin had two wpins and a technical fall before recoring a 10-0 major decision in the finals.
They were joined on top of the podium by 113-pound champion Billy Wehring, who also dominated his weight class.Brad Andrews, in his first meet as a Ranger, also shined, finishing second at 120, beating the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds before falling in triple overtime in the finals.
"We've got some work to do, but overall it was a good day," said Methuen coach Bill James.
