Andover rolls over rival Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — Andover was tired of hearing about the losing streak. The Golden Warriors were sick of hearing that they could not beat Chelmsford, a reputation that had dogged the program for longer than the current team members have been alive.

“We have wanted to beat Chelmsford since middle school,” said Andrew Deloury. “It has just been forever, so to finally overcome that is a really big deal for us. It is the best feeling I could imagine.”

Against a team Andover had beaten just once in the last 13 seasons and struggled against for more than two decades, the Golden Warriors scored twice in the first 5:05 of the game and never led up en route to a 42-22 thrashing of defending MVC Division 1 champion Chelmsford last night.

“This is our biggest win of the year,” said linebacker Adam Ladd, whose squad now sits at 8-0. “This has a very special meaning to us. None of us have ever beat Chelmsford at any level, so this is a really big deal.”

Andover’s last varsity football win over Chelmsford was in 2009, which snapped a 10-game losing skid. The Lions had owned a 5-22-1 advantage over the Warriors since The Eagle-Tribune began keeping records in 1984.

“We knew we could beat them,” said Farnham. “Besides Central Catholic on Thanksgiving, Chelmsford is our biggest game of the year, so this is huge.”

Record day: C.J. Scarpa’s third-quarter touchdown pass to a sliding Farnham marked his 24th passing TD of the season. That broke the Eagle-Tribune area’s modern record.

“I really didn’t know,” said the modest Scarpa. “Then Cam ran over to me and told me I had just broke the area touchdown record, and it was really a shock.”

Good luck shirt: Andover safety Chas Heseltine wasn’t trying to fool the opponents when he came out wearing the No. 7 jersey in the first half last night. He had forgotten his regular No. 11 shirt at home, and to make due with an extra jersey.

The very superstitious senior was very relieved when a family member arrived with his normal jersey at halftime, and the first play after the break he picked off a pass.

“I guess it worked,” he said with a laugh.
