WRENTHAM — North Reading coach Derek Dorval has a reputation for developing young runners and it looks like he’s doing it again with junior Nicole Roberts.

Roberts finished third overall in yesterday’s Eastern Mass. Division 5 meet at Wrentham with an excellent time of 19:02.1 on the 5K course.

She not only led all local runners in that race, but she had the best local time of the day in any of the six divisions and will be vying to finish in the top 20 in next week’s Division 2 All-State meet in Northfield.

In a similar position will be Haverhill’s Jackie Solimine and Riley Gilmore, who finished 7th and 11th in the Division 1 meet with times of 19:04.3 and 19:15.3.

They will be running in the Division 1 All-State meet as individuals because, after eight straight years, the Hillies failed to advance as a team.

Joining them at the Division 1 All-State Meet as individuals will be Andover’s Sarah Rothman and Meghan McPhee, who finished together at 20-21 in 19:41.

Andover finished eighth as a team, edging the Hillies by one place. Leila Aruri finished 31st for Andover, but did not qualify for All-State.

Lowell placed first in Division 1 with 83 points and Peabody’s Catarina Rocha was the overwhelming individual winner, cruising to first with a brilliant time of 17:27.4.

In Division 2, Central Catholic came in seventh and North Andover grabbed 10th. Sophomore Tiffany Simione (19:45.2) and Caroline MacDonald (19:49.9) enjoyed an excellent day, coming in 14th and 17th respectively, to advance to the All-State meet. Deirdre Martyn was 36th for North Andover.

Returning to Division 5, Pentucket finished eighth as a team, led by senior Marissa Porter, who was ninth in 19:48.

Injured all of last year, Porter advanced to the Division 2 All-State Meet. Teammate Kasey Mann was 45 for the Sachems.

The Cape Ann League took two of the top three positions in the meet as perennial power Hamilton-Wenham and Newburyport finished second and third respectively behind surprising Weston.
