Raiders runner-up in Division 1 North golf

With another impressive performance, St. John's Prep easily came out on top of the Division 1 North leaderboard in sectional competition at Bradford Country Club yesterday.

With its top four golfers shooting a combined 312, Central Catholic nosed out Lincoln-Sudbury by a single stroke for the runner-up spot, 11 shots behind the Eagles.

The top four teams and 12 individuals qualified for state divisional play at Norton Country Club on Monday.

Tyler Nelson was the top individual for the Raiders and the top area individual finisher, firing a 72 that was good for fifth overall. Brendan Shirley (13th overall with an 78), Mark Mancini and Ryan Ajermian (tied for 15th with 81s) helped boost Central into second place.

Two other area golfers advanced as Andover's Brett Krekorian came in tied for sixth with a 75 while Haverhill's Scott Farley edged his way into the state title field with a 77 that was good for a 10th place tie.

In Division 2 play at Boxford's Far Corner GC, Alec Brown of North Andover was the lone player to advance as his 79 put him in a tie for fifth overall. As a team, the Knights came in tied for sixth as Concord-Carlisle edged Masconomet for the team crown.

Ryan Dlaney finished in a 10-player logjam for fifth place at North Reading's home Hillside Golf Course to advance out of Division 3 North play.

Triton was the team winner, drawing 11 shots clear of runner-up Arlington Catholic.
