Throw Pentucket out of the River Rival equation on the girls side and after another season of terrific action it has been hard to figure out the remaining three teams | Amesbury, Newburyport, and Triton.
After the Indians pulled off the season sweep of the Clippers with a 46-37 victory the final season records against each other look as follows: Newburyport 2-0 vs. Triton, and Amesbury 1-1 against Triton. Yet, the Indians will be the only team left at home come tournament time.
Although Friday night at the Nock Middle School in Newburyport, it was the Indians | led by McDonald's All-American finalist Bre Comeau's 18 points | who looked like the team preparing for tournament action.
After a tough performance in their previous outing against Triton | a 52-21 loss | the Indians led the entire way against their Clipper counterparts and held on down the stretch thanks to some terrific guard play.
"Kendall Connors, Kelsey Fournier, and Gabrielle Magnifico did a really nice job for us just playing some solid basketball from the guard position," said the satisfied Amesbury coach Chris Perry after the game. "We never really had any great stretches, but we didn't have any bad ones either.
"Overall I think the girls kept their poise, and got better as the game went on," Perry followed up. "We were very pleased to end the season in a good way | there's always a couple of games you would like to have back | but it's nice when you go out and play hard even if you're not playing for a championship."
