The Manchester Essex boys basketball team can look to one reason why it wasn't able to knock off unbeaten Newburyport last night.
The free throw line.
The Clippers went to the charity stripe 22 times in the fourth quarter and 29 times in the game en route to defeating the Hornets 74-65. Newburyport (4-0) converted 21 of 29 free throw attempts, while Manchester Essex scored just 11 points at the line.
"The difference in the game was definitely the amount of free throw that Newburyport too," said Manchester Essex head coach Bill Cahill, whose team is now 1-3. "You have to give them credit because they hit a lot of those free throws."
The Hornets led 36-31 at the half, thanks to huge nights from senior guard Marty Nally (18 points) and freshman Joe Mussachia (game-high 20 points). However, the Clippers made some big shots behind the arch in the second half to take control of the game.
