Playing against a Pope John team that has added three players from the Division 4 state runner-up Savio Prep (which closed last spring), Manchester Essex couldn't match the hot shooting of its hosts, falling 79-63.
Led by senior guard Brett Mayo (seven 3-pointers), who had a game-high 30 points, Pope John (1-0) was on fire from outside as they made 11 3-pointers for the game.
Senior guard Marty Nally (11 points) paced the Hornets (0-1) while senior captain and point guard James Settipane (nine points), senior forward Andrew Willwerth (eight points) and senior forward Ian Graham (eight points) were other bright spots.
Manchester Essex hosts Georgetown on Friday.
