St. John's Prep sprinter Bryan Browne of Georgetown won the 300 meter (35.72) at the Division 1 state meet yesterday. He was the only local boy to win his event.
"He's had a phenomenal season," St. John's Prep coach Ray Carey said. "He is going to be seeded fourth likely in All-States and has a great chance to score high."
Browne, who plays soccer during the fall, also qualified for the indoor nationals in New York City.
A 200- and 400-yard sprinter during spring track, Browne also is a great student.
The senior is a member of the National Honor Society, has a 4.4 out 4.0 GPA with AP classes and has been accepted at Boston College. He still is waiting to hear back from Harvard and Columbia.
Browne plans to run in college.
"And will run well at any of those places," Carey said.
Other local boys to place high were Haverhill's Michael McNaughton, who took third in the 1,000 (2:32.60) and Methuen's Mike O'Donnell, who finished second in the mile (4:19.86).
Andover's Ryan Cooney, Michael Maldari, Will Klien and Patrick O'Sullivan took third in the 4x800 (8:05.17).
