O’DONNELL SETS RECORD
Methuen’s Michael O’Donnell won the 2-mile in 9:31.58, breaking the previous meet record of 9:33.12.
O’Donnell has come a long way. He ran the 1,000 meters in last year’s MVC indoor meet and finished seventh.
“I just want to try do my best every time, and if that’s breaking
records, then I’m more than happy to do that,” said O’Donnell, who ran
a 4:17.05 mile last week.
O’Donnell said he believes he will be running the mile at Division 1 States.
GOLD FOR GARVEY
Patrick Garvey had high jumped 6 feet only once this season, Haverhill’s season opener.
“It was so frustrating,” Garvey said.
But Garvey had a strong week of practice and was confident he could do 6 feet. He did, winning the high jump with a 6-2.
“Hopefully, at States I can get 6-5,” he said.
ANOTHER McNAUGHTON CHAMPION
Haverhill’s Michael McNaughton was trying to finish in the top three in the 1,000.
“I wasn’t expecting to take the win because I had been injured for two weeks out of the season at the beginning,” he explained.
McNaughton not only won the 1,000 but he set the meet record (2:33.32). The previous record was 2:33.72.
“I ended up getting a PR (personal becord) by like five seconds,” he said.
McNaughton, who is ranked seventh in his class, would like to run and study sports medicine at BC, Cornell or UMass Amherst.
His sisters, Colleen, a grad school student at Columbia, and Christine, who runs at UMass, are both former MVC champions.
