Phillips coach Leon Modeste was far from pleased about how his squad's 2011 season opened, as the Big Blue fell to Loomis Chaffee 33-13 yesterday.
"It hurts," said Modeste. "We were really banged up, but you still have to play, and we did not play well tonight."
Phillips grabbed a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter, when Tyler West broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run. But Loomis Chaffee responded with five unanswered touchdowns to take control. Phillips added a late touchdown.
"We have to find out who is willing to play," said Modeste. "We are still finding ourselves. We need people to step up and make some plays."
Phillips especally struggled on special teams, allowing a punt and kickoff return for touchdowns and a botched span on a punt led to a safety.
"Those special teams plays were huge," said Modeste.
Joe Kruy led the Big Blue with 101 yards rushing on 11 carries. Defensive linemen Matt Cohen and Zach Greenberg led the Phillips defense along with freshman Tim Salvadore.
"We couldn't get them off the field," said Modeste. "We wore down. They did a nice job moving the ball and we couldn't slow them."
