Dan O'Connel gave it that extra little burst of speed yesterday to help the Central Catholic boys cross country team make a little history.

O'Connell sprinted past Methuen No. 3 runner Conor Clark to grab sixth place and clinch a 27-29 victory over the Rangers, marking the first time in 14 years that Central has beaten the perennial power.

Mike O'Donnell and Lucas Parsons went one-two for the Rangers, in 15:05 and 15:08 over Methuen's redesigned 2.8-mile course, but Tim Allen (15:32) ran his best race of the year to take third, Adam Gidley was fourth and Dave DeLuca was ninth.

"The kids ran really hard and finished strong," said Central coach Rob Benedetto. "It was the biggest win since I've been coach (six years). We had kids step it up because our fourth runner (Simon Serrano) was out sick."

Central made it a sweep on the day by also beating Dracut (15-44) and Billerica (21-38).
