EXETER, N.H. — After his All-Division 1 halfback was stopped by a finger-tip tackle on his first carry, Pinkerton coach Brian O'Reilly implored, "Trust your speed, Emmitt (Smith)! Trust it!"

O'Reilly certainly never doubted it for an instant, and Smith delivered like the defending 200-meter all-state sprint champion he is, rolling up 244 yards and three TDs on just eight touches as the Astros clubbed previously unbeaten Exeter, 42-16.

"Emmitt's speed was the difference tonight," said O'Reilly. "In my eyes, he is bar none the best speed back in this state. He showed what he can do again tonight."

The senior had TD breakaways of 80, 96 and 23 yards, mixing in a 62-yard dash that set up the first of three Kevin Davies TDs.

Up 7-0, Pinkerton (6-0) landed the knockout shots in the second quarter, just as it did to Salem two weeks back.
The 230-pound Kevin Davies (9 carries, 121 yards) swept left and outran everyone, going 67 yards on one TD.

Smith first went 96 yards then broke Exeter's back with his 80-yarder, when Pinkerton took over possession at its own 20 with 26 seconds left before halftime.

"We expected to score a touchdown on that possession," said O'Reilly.

Meanwhile, the unheralded Astro defense caused fits for Exeter's inside running game, keeping everything in front of them and making the Blue Hawks earn every inch.

"We went to work this week, because there were some things we knew that had to be done to stop their offense," said Astros defensive lineman Moise Williams. "But it was all business this week defensively. We know we can score, but this whole thing won't work if we don't shut people down. We take pride in that defensively."

Adam Olsen, Matt Madden, Andrew Curran and Alex Pacocha also led the charge for a defense that spent a ton of time on the field but made sure nothing came easily for Exeter.

While the Astros chewed up an amazing 17.3 yards per snap, Exeter was held to a more rational 4.4.

Pinkerton now takes a break from the Granite State schedule and thanks to the Jewish Holiday picks up a couple extra days rest before going back to work in preparation for a home date with Brockton, one week from tomorrow.
