Georgetown coach Mike Rowinski said his Royals and Winthrop were like mirror images.
But in the evenly-matched Division 4 North semifinal game, the Vikings (16-6) got off to a quick start and held off the Royals, 71-58.
Guards Johnny Spears and Tyler Wade combined for 30 points but the Royals (14-9) were surprised by Anthony Hatzisavas, who had 22 points thanks to some relentless work on the offensive boards.
"As so often, there is a kid who comes out of nowhere," lamented Rowinski, who said Hatzisavas was a non-factor when they scouted Winthrop. "We just couldn't keep him off the boards."
Georgetown battled back and was within a point with three minutes left. But the Royals missed an opener jumper and the Vikings made them pay with a backbreaking hoop.
" We had one senior and we won 14 games," noted Rowinwski. "If you asked me at the beginning of the year I would have said we said might win 5-6 games."
