Central controls Andover

LAWRENCE - A lot of factors go into winning basketball. But nothing good ever happens if a team can't hold onto the ball.

Maintaining possession was something Central Catholic did to perfection for an entire half of a Merrimack Valley Conference showdown Sunday afternoon. And playing turnover free in the middle two quarters helped send the Raiders to a 62-53 victory over rival Andover.

Central breezes past Andover

Xavier McKenzie scored 20 of his game-high 23 in the first half as Central Catholic won the White Division consolation game in the Christmas Classic 64-48 over Andover.

The Raiders had 13 three-pointers, including six from McKenzie, compared to only 10 two-point field goals. After scoring 26 points in the second quarter, Central led at half 42-21. Seven different Raiders scored at least six points.

Lowell 64, Central Catholic 57

 

LAWRENCE —Standout Lowell  guard Carlos Nunez was sure of two things by halftime at Central Catholic Friday night.

Held to one field goal and four points in the first half, with Lowell clinging to a 33-29 lead, Nunez was confident he'd come alive in the second half and he had come to realize that the host Raiders — with only one starter back from last year's 22-4 North finalist squad — were a little tougher than he expected.
