MILLIS — Good friends from Atkinson Country Club Joe Leavitt from Central Catholic and Nick Pandelena from St. John's Prep waged a memorable battle yesterday at the Division 1 State Open at Glen Ellen Country Club.
Those two and Keegan Levin of St. John's of Shrewsbury all shot a 1-under par 71, forcing a playoff.
Pandelena sank a tough 8-footer for par and Levin and Leavitt missed on 4-footers to give Pandelena the crown.
"It was a great way for Nick to finish. Just great," said Prep coach Larry O'Neill. "The last 6-7 holes were just pouring rain."
Pandelena, an Atkinson resident who will golf at Boston College, became the fourth state champion from the Prep in the last 62 years.
Complete Eagle-Tribune records go back through the spring of 1989, and in that span it's believe Pandelena is the first local state champion. Leavitt, Haverhill's Bill Drohen (spring 1990, spring 1991) and Haverhill's Marc Spencer (spring 1991) lost playoffs when there was a true All-States with just one division.
On Monday, Pentucket-Georgetown's Jason Steele lost a playoff for the Division 2 state title.
St. John's of Shrewsbury won with a 302 followed by St. John's Prep with a 307. Andover, the lone local qualifier, placed eighth with a 322. Andover's four scorers were:  Ryan Burke 77, Stephan Vaz 80, Brett Krekorian 81, Tyler Stahl 84.

Pentucket’s pairing of Jason Steele and Mac Cavanaugh placed second behind Masconomet, by shooting a 4-under 68 at Far Corner in the Cape Ann League Open. Steele was named Cape Ann League Large Player of the Year. Pentucket coach Jayne Beaton was named CAL Large Coach of the Year. Masconomet’s winning score was a 66. Steele and Cavanaugh received All-CAL honors, along with Triton’s Richard Fecteau, North Andover’s Colin Hubbel, Manchester Essex’s Ben Bichet and Masconomet’s Charlie May and Alex Kane. The Sachems weren't done, hooking up for nine more holes to knock off Lynnfield, 163-148, behind 36 points from Steele ad 31 from Corey McNamara.

The Pentucket golf team, which lost to Newburyport earlier in the season, got revenge and then some by whipping the Clippers 18 1/2 to 1 1/2. Jason Steele, Mac Cavanaugh, Corey McNamara, Jeff Funk, C.J. Ingraham, Nick Pendergast and Parker Kelly all won their matches for the Sachems (14-2-1). Ingraham shot a 38 as the No. 6 man and Pendergast fired a 39 at No. 7.

 Dylan Cody was victorious and shot a Haverhill low 39 to highlight the Hillies' 16-4 win over Methuen. The Rangers' Jake Hume fired a sizzling two-under 33.

Joe Leavitt set a high school career-high with a 3-under par 33 in Central Catholic's 15-5 win over Lowell. Leavitt, a two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star,  had four birdies over the nine holes.

Central Catholic won every match over Methuen in a 20-0 victory. Joe Leavitt carded seven pars and two birdies and Tyler Nelson fired an even-par 36.

Pentucket-Georgetown won the River Rival Tourney for the first time in 2001 and did it in convincing fashion. Jason Steele shot an even par 35 and earned 36 quota points to rule the four-team tourney. Alex Ministeri was the No. 2 player overall on the day with 32 points.

Brett Krekorian fired a 1-under par 34 for medalist honors, and was 3-under for much of the day, as Andover beat Havehrill 13-7.  The Hillies' Ryan Paris was next best with a 37.

The Pentucket and Masconomet golf teams battled to a rare 10-10 tie yesterday despite impressive winning performances by Jason Steele, Mac Cavanaugh, Nick Pendergast and Krystal Knight.

Londonderry's Taylor Simpson fired a 75 at Nashua Golf Club yesterday to finish in a tie for 11th in the New Hampshire Division 1 Golf Tournament. In Division 2, Pelham's Jake Vaiknoras shot an 80 at Canterbury Woods to finish 12th.

Hanover won the Division II golf state tournament over Windham, which was favored by finished second. 

Both Hanover and Windham finished with 403 points, but Hanover won the tiebreaker. 

Pinkerton freshman Kaitlyn Lutinski shot a 91 to take sixth at the girls state championships. Lebanon's Colette Schmidt won with a 73. Another Astrosh 9th grader, Micaela Griffin, carded a nine-hole 46 to take second in the medal flight.

Brett Krekorian remained undefeated at the No. 1 spot for Andover golf.

He shot a 37 to improve to 4-0-1. He helped Andover win 13.5-6.5 over Tewksbury. 

Joe Leavitt chipped in on the eighth hole and rolled to the win as Central Catholic beat Chelmsford 14.5-5.5.

Senior Colin Gerstenberger earned his first career victory in his final regular season match with a 36 as Windham bested John Stark and ConVal.
