Owls in the lead

By placing 12 of 14 wrestlers in this morning's quarterfinals, Timberlane ended the first day in first place at the Lowell Holiday George Bossi Tournament.

The Owls have 127 points with Shawsheen Tech next at 111. Lawrence is fifth in the 60-team field and Central Catholic is in 10th.

Surviving some holes in its lineup, Pelham swept a wrestling tri-meet against Campbell and Windham. Mike Perruccio (135 pounds), Peter Soonthornprapuet (140) and Warren Greenhalgh (171) each had a pair of pins for the youthful Pythons (3-1). Dylan Swiderski's late pin at 119 was a highlight for Windham.

Freshman Paul Sughrue kicked off his varsity career in style, pinning his opponent at 112 pounds in just 1:22 to help Methuen defeat Xaverian, 40-33. Sophomore Jason Pendergast also excelled at 125 with a solid 9-5 win over one of Xaverian's better competitors.

Winning five of the seven lighter weight matches led Salem to a solid early-season victory over Pinkerton, 42-33. Jon Rheaume (112 pounds) had one of five pins overall for the Blue Devils, winning at 112 pounds. David Owens (135) and Collin Crowell shined for the Astros.

Sophomore's hard work pays off

Sophomore Corey Chaff's pin in the 112 weight class was just one of the many highlights in North Andover's 63-0 rout over Hamilton-Wenham. "It was his first year last year and he just came out for the team to be a part of something," assistant coach Carl Cincotta said about Chaff. "He did not win too much last year. He worked hard in the offseason. He did offseason wrestling, lifted weights and went to camps. That (win) was a highlight."

Freshman beats senior captain

Timberlane freshman Josh Burnhan had a memorable first ever high school match. He pinned Exeter senior captain Chris Brooks in 1 minute, 54 seconds.

"He was actually winning 7-2 in the first period and ended up getting the fall so he looked very impressive," coach Barry Chooljian said. "We think he's pretty good. We were happy with how he took the mat." aggressively."
