Brooks drops defensive struggle

NORTH ANDOVER — Points were at a premier Saturday afternoon, but when the final buzzer sounded Brooks had dropped a 15-12 nailbitter to Groton.

After a scoreless first half, Brooks (0-2) struck first when John Manzi broke off a 20-yard touchdown run, but the extra point attempt failed. Groton (2-0) quickly responded with a Caleb Coleman 11-yard run to make it a 7-6 game, but Brooks took a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth when Darrel Yepdo caught a 7-yard pass from Connor Silva.

Lane ignites outburst

 

Georgetown's Travis Lane had five RBIs including three ona home run in the top of the seventh to ignite Phillips Academy to seven runs with two outs to pull away for an 11-4 win over Groton. The Big Blue improved to 11-1.

Frechette leaps ahead

Fresh off a dominant season on the basketball court, Governor's Academy's D.J. Frechette had a big day for the boys track team on Saturday, winning both the long jump (19-10 1/2) and the high jump (5-6) to help Governor's take second out of four with 64 team points. Andrew Swiniarski won the discus (124-11), Tae Tantinon won the javelin (155-7) and Dan Flynn won the 300-meter hurdles (48.7).

Willis wins two

Becca Willis won both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles in Saturday's meet for Governor's Academy girls track, taking the 100 in 17.1 and the 300 in 51.5. Grace Everett also won the 800 (2:37.2) and Julia Russolillo won the pole vault (8-0) as the Governor's girls took second out of four with 82.5 team points.

Govs wins in double overtime

Trailing Groton by two with 1:57 to go, Governor's got goals from Samantha Davidson and Meghan Umansky to send the game to overtime. Once there, Governor's and Groton traded goals before Reanne Burgess scored the winner in double overtime with 15 seconds left to win 10-9. Umansky had four goals and Sarah Moore had two in the win.

Nate Laliberte won 19 of 20 faceoffs, helping Governor's boys lacrosse crush Groton 16-2. Laliberte also had a goal and an assist, Will Murtagh had three goals and two assists and C.J. Baroni posted a hat trick of his own.

Brooks dominates

 

The Brooks boys soccer team had no problem in its first playoff game, dominating Groton before settling for a 3-1 victory in the New England Prep B quarterfinals. Andrew Stevens led the way for Brooks (13-0-5), which will be at home again Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Knights pull upset

 

Sophie Meyers (15 kills, 4 blocks) and Julia Webster were immense at the net as North Andover handed Groton-Dunstable its first loss of the season, 3-2. Julia Karim had 24 digs for the Knights (11-5).
