Sachems can't snag upset

Pentucket Regional came as close to a giant upset as you can get, falling in overtime to Wilmington, 72-65. "We missed a layup with one second left in regulation," said Sachem coach Leo Parent. "We had about as good a look as you can get with one second and it just didn't roll in. Then we just ran out of gas in overtime." North Andover wins going away

Derek Collins scored eight straight points to spark a 12-0 run in the final minutes as North Andover put aside Wilmington, 62-58. The Knights trailed 50-49 with three minutes to play before Collins (16 points) buried a pair of long-range shots to ignite North Adover's stretch drive to the win. Zach Karalis had 15 for the Knights (2-0).

Coming up clutch

With the meet on the line in the final event, the team of Bernadette Corrado, Lexi Kitsakos, Marissa Porter and Liz Beauregard won the 4x400 relay in 4:36.6 to give Pentucket a season-opening 46-40 win over North Andover. Kitsakos (high jump), Corrado (300) and Porter (600) each added an individual win for the Sachems, who also bested Wilmington in the tri-meet.

WEST NEWBURY — Hours before the game, while eating his breakfast, Pentucket’s Nolan Dragon looked over at his father and told him he had a good feeling.

“I said, ‘I feel like we can win today,’” remembered Dragon. “It wasn’t a prediction, but we felt really confident that we could take this one.”
