SALEM | All the signs are there for Scott Connolly and the Salem High football team.

Five wins last season, following a three-year record of 3-30, have the Witches thinking about taking the next step. Salem returns several starters from last year's club, and there isn't a coach in the Northeastern Conference who would leave the Witches out of a conversation about the teams to watch in 2007.

BEVERLY | They had emerged from two winless seasons in the previous three years to have this, the most successful Salem High football campaign since 1999.

So forgive the Witches' seniors if they were understandably despondent over yesterday's 28-7 loss to arch rival Beverly at Hurd Stadium, one that not only saw them end their year at 5-5, but also end their careers.

SALEM | It's hard to believe, but after just three games the Salem High football team now has the same number of victories the program recorded over the last three seasons | combined.

The surprising Witches improved to 3-0 on the season with a convincing 21-7 win over Swampscott before a large crowd at Bertram Field last night.
