Depth sinks Sachems

Pentucket sophomore Phoebe Rubio took top honors with a fine time of 18:47 on the 2.94-mile Maudslay Park course and the Sachems took three of the top five places but they couldn't keep pace with Newburyport's depth and dropped its first meet of the season, 29-30. The Newburyport boys also handed Pentucket its first loss as well.

Knights girls 5th

 

Led by Leyla Kvaternik, the North Andover girls came in fifth at the Frank Kelley Invitational. Kvaternik, who was the top sophomore, in the race, was sixth in 19:57.55 on Wrentham's 5K course with teammate Abby Mastromonaco taking 12th. The Knights were just 19 points out of second place despite missing Courtney Dalke, who was at a band concert.

Clippers win five-set thriller

The Newburyport girls volleyball team edged out Ipswich in a thrilling, back-and-forth match on Friday night, winning 3-2 after narrowly taking the decisive fifth-set. Sydney Yim led the Clippers with nine kills and Abigail Gillingham had seven blocks as Newburyport lost the first set 25-23, won the next two 25-19 and 25-21, and lost the fourth set 25-23 before winning the winner-take-all fifth 15-13. Newburyport is now 1-1 to start the year and is at Triton on Tuesday.

North Andover cross country coach Rick Dellechiaie has high hopes for his top three girl runners this fall and they certainly didn't disappoint Saturday at the season-opening Clipper Relays.

Rangers on rise

 

With two sophomores iin the trio, Methuen's top relay team finished an impressive ninth at the Clipper Relays Saturday. Senior Xavier Metivier led the way with a 9:56 for two miles while sophs Freddy Coleman and Jason Dibble ran 10:10 and 10:52. Both times were nearly a minute better than last year and Dibble ran slightly more than two miles as the anchor leg.

Port volleyball strong in loss

Newburyport volleyball lost its opener 3-1 to Methuen on Tuesday, but not before pushing the Rangers to their limit in the pivotal third set. Newburyport lost the first set 25-19, won the second 25-17, and then wound up dropping the third 28-26 after an intense back and forth battle. The Rangers went on to clinch in the fourth 25-20, and Sydney Yim led the Clippers in kills in a strong opening performance.

Clippers dominate opener

Newburyport golf opened its season with a decisive home win over Hamilton-Wenham, taking the match 148-94. Colin Richmond led the Clippers with 33 points while Sam Lyman and Andrew Cullen tied for second with 29 points. Newburyport is now 1-0 to start interim coach Bill Pettingell's tenure.

Rock bottom to CAL champs

The Pentucket baseball team was 2-18 all of last spring. But after Saturday's 4-2 win over rival Newburyport, the Sachems (12-7) clinched the CAL Kinney Division championship to complete the epic turnaround. Peter Cleary pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and Kyle Stock had two hits and two RBIs.

New school records

Jack Clohisy continued his great spring on the track, and was the highlight for a Pentucket boys team that came in fourth at Saturday's Cape Ann League Championship with 65 points. He won the 400 hurdles (56.77) and came in fourth in the long jump (19-10.50), but made his mark in the high hurdles where his second-place time of 14.64 broke his own school record of 14.92.

Trailing by seven at halftime to a talented Newburyport team, Central Catholic girls lacrosse pulled the thrilling comeback to edge out a 17-15 win. Ciera Licare led the charge with six goals and Olivia DeLonais had three.
