MALDEN — Senior running back Quinn McDonough racked up 241 yards on the ground by halftime and finished with 368 yards rushing as Malden Catholic downed the Lancers 42-32 at a soggy Brother Gilbert Stadium.

LAWRENCE — Mike Yameen remembers the game and the play like it was yesterday.“Turkey Day when he was a freshman, we brought Harvey (Blanco) up for the game with Greater Lawrence. He’s out there returning a kick, lowers his shoulder, runs somebody over and bulls up the field,” Yameen recalled. “Now Harvey’s got braces. He comes to the sideline, busted helmet, blood everywhere, doesn’t say a word, grabs some water and buckles up to get back in there.

Most Valuable Runner

St. John's Prep Runner Mike Masse, a resident of North Andover, was named the MVP of the Tri-County League during the League Championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. Masse then went on to win the 1,000 meter race with a time of 2:34.50.

The Haverhill boys soccer team snuck out a close one as they beat Malden Catholic 2-1. Charlie Roche and Corey Pond tallied both goals and Will Menter assisted on Roche's goal. Luke McCartney had four saves to help the Hillies close out the season at 14-2.

Game-saver

After a Josh Voto penalty kick put the Central Catholic boys soccer team on top 12 minutes into the second half, it was up to netminder Connor Slein to preserve the slim 1-0 lead. He did just that as he had a great late backhanded save (one of his seven on the day) on a kick from just outside penalty area, sending Central to its fifth win of the year.

After playing with wooden bats all spring in the Catholic Conference, Malden Catholic is relishing the ping of the aluminum bats in the state tournament.

 The Lancers proved it again yesterday in a 13-8 win over Central Catholic in the Division 1 North quarterfinals at Merrimack College. That ended a superb 19-4 season for the Raiders.

Eagles qualify for postseason with win

The Eagles qualified for its 12th postseason appearance in the last 14 years under head coach John Roy as a trio of scorers each had three goals. John Jennings led the way for St. John's (9-1) with three goals and three assists, Garrett Campbell had three goals and two helpers, and Will Duryea also had a hat trick and contributed one assist. Mark Scalise (4 assists) and Jon Siderewicz also had goals, while goalkeeper Tyler Cash had 12 saves.
