BROCKTON — Pinkerton was on its way to a game-tying touchdown in the final minute when an interception squelched its opportunity.

The Astros (5-2) held a one-point advantage late in the third quarter when the Boxers punched in the game’s final score, handing Pinkerton a 21-14 non-league loss.

“It was a disappointing performance today,” said Pinkerton head coach Brian O’Reilly. “We made mistakes that have to be corrected.”

Prior to the loss-sealing interception, which came with 30 seconds remaining, Pinkerton lost the ball inside the red zone, late in the first half.

That loss of the football turned the momentum as the Astros were looking to build on an 8-7 lead. Instead, Brockton marched down and scored to take a 13-8 intermission lead.

Manny Latimore (13 carries, 70 yards) scored with 6:33 to go in the third quarter to put the Astros ahead.  But Brockton responded before the quarter was closed and Pinkerton didn’t have an answer back.

Emmitt Smith (team-best 83 yards) led Pinkerton with 83 yards rushing.  Kevin Davies (36 yards) scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter.

The Astros play at Concord next Saturday (1 p.m.).
