SALEM, N.H. — Salem marched onto the field for the second half of last night’s game with Concord a different team, but not for the better.

Taking a 13-point lead into the locker room, Concord scored 35 points in the second half to secure a 42-29 upset win over the Blue Devils.

“They obviously made more plays than we did,” said Salem head coach Jack Gati. “Give (Concord) all the credit in the world. They took away what we do best and they just ran the ball.”

After Salem went three-and-out to start the second half, Concord’s offense took over, finding the end zone twice in a 13-second span on consecutive offensive snaps to start the third quarter.

First, Concord quarterback Graham McIntire scrambled 53 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. After recovering a squib kick, the Crimson Tide handed off to Tolbert Nemo, who sprinted 23 yards to give Concord a 21-20 lead that it would never relinquish.

On Concord’s next possession, the Crimson Tide marched down the field 60 yards in eight plays, capped with an 18-yard touchdown run by Nemo.

“We couldn’t stop them,” Gati said. “They were making big plays on big downs.”

But Salem had its chances. The Blue Devils brought Concord to seven third downs in the second half, but the Crimson Tide converted on six of them.

“They ran up the middle well on us,” Gati said. “They did a lot of things that other teams just haven’t done to us. Sure, some teams have scored points on us but they did it with ease.”

Concord’s defensive front — there were often eight in the box — dominated Salem’s offensive line and were crunching star backs Jerikson Fedrick and Max Jacques often at the line of scrimmage, after both backs had terrific first halves.

“Their split end made some great catches,” Gati said. “They outplayed us. They converted on those third downs and then ended up finishing off those drives with touchdowns.”

Playoff hopes in jeopordy

With last night’s loss, Salem will need some help in order to qualify for the Division 1 tournament.

Losses by Nashua South and Manchester Central tomorrow would see the Blue Devils in a three-way tie for third place.

But if both teams win, Salem would sit one game behind each with one game to play.

The Blue Devils would be locked out of third place with a Nashua South win — they lose the tie breaker — but would be in the hunt for the fourth and final playoff spot, holding the tie breaker with Central thanks to a 45-19 win in Week 2.
