Pressure defense rewarded a fourth-quarter comeback, earning Haverhill a 45-43 overtime victory over Pelham for seventh place in the Greater Haverhill Christmas Tourney.
Now at 1-5 on the season, the Hillies' last victory was also against the Pythons 36 games ago.
"Down the stretch we kind of calmed down, and in the overtime we played very good defense," said Haverhill head coach Bob Melillo. "This win was for the girls, and I hope this will be the start of turning things around."
Holding Pelham scoreless over the final 2:45 of regulation, a nice lane drive by point guard Kayla Pellot (game-high 17 points) capped the comeback from a six-point deficit and set up the extra session.
Senior Moriah Nutter (10 points) sunk a soft baseline jumper with 1:42 left in overtime for the winning points, rewarding the 55 fans in attendance.
Hard-working freshman forward Gina Grimes led the Pythons (0-5) with 12 points with classmate Rebecca DeBaldo adding seven points.
