MARBLEHEAD | After coming into last night's game with visiting Lynn Classical "cocky (and) a bit arrogant" according to their head coach, the Marblehead High football team got the exact opposite of what they were expecting last night.

Coming off of an emotional win over Salem a week ago, the Magicians were soundly thrashed by an explosive Lynn Classical team, which racked up 533 yards of offense en route to a 42-13 win at Piper Field.

"We got manhandled ... we didn't show up to play. The game is 44 minutes, and if you don't play a full game, then this will happen every time," Chernovetz said.

"These guys expected to show up in their red and white (uniforms) and were going to win, just like that."

Classical had an armada of backs it displayed | 17 of whom carried the ball; had a 15-0 advantage in first downs in the first half and led, 28-0, at the break. The Rams wound up with 467 yards on the ground and 66 yards in the air.

"We controlled the line of scrimmage. That was the difference," Lynn Classical's Bryndyn Primus said after a two-touchdown night.

It helped, of course, that the Rams (3-1) were bigger, stronger and a great deal quicker than their hosts.

"We also wanted to bounce back from last week's (35-25) loss to Winthrop," Chad Quintana, who ran seven times for 56 yards.

Classical led 42-0 before Magicians sophomore quarterback Hayes Richardson fired a pair of scoring strikes against the Rams' backups: a 63-yard connection with Taariq Allen with 5:21 left and 39-yard payoff pass to Tim Morris.

"Did I see any positives? Well, the young kids played well, and we'll have them around for a while," Chernovetz said.

Quivari Jackson (9 carries, 75 yards) collected two TDs for Classical, whose defense was just as imposing as its race-car offense.

Jackson opened the scoring on a 4-yard jaunt and was the receiving end of a 35-yard strike from quarterback Alex Walter, who was 2-for-2 passing, both for touchdowns. He also found Cam Smith on a 31-yard six-pointer.

Such is Classical's depth that it had a 75-yard TD run nullified | and on the very next play Primus went the distance from 71 yards out.

"I think we read the newspapers too much," defensive lineman Sam Perlow, a junior captain for Marblehead, lamented.

"I feel we learned a group lesson tonight. I don't know if we were ready for that kind of a battle."

Marblehead had minus-10 yards rushing and minus-3 yards passing in the first half.
