TOPSFIELD | Masconomet defensive end Teddy Reed waited patiently under the goalposts as he was the last player to be introduced to the crowd before the Thanksgiving Day game against North Andover yesterday.

It was a nice way to bow out of the regular season, with the players escorting their parents to the center of the field. But after those pleasant moments prior to the game, Reed and his defensive teammates turned nasty, putting enormous pressure on North Andover from beginning to end in a dominating 42-14 win that propelled Masco to the postseason for the second straight season.

Reed and the Chieftains simply wouldn't let North Andover get anything going until it was much too late. The Scarlet Knights finished with just 38 yards on the ground and 180 yards of total offense.

"We watched a lot of film on those guys," Reed said of North Andover. "Not to take anything away from them, but we were well prepared."

They were also inspired by Kevin Anderson's tackle on the game's opening kickoff.

"Kevin isn't known as a big hitter, but he made a big hit on the first play of the game and that set the tone for us," said Reed. "And then (Christian) Bandereck laid out somebody (on Masco's second kickoff). That got us going, too."

North Andover didn't score until it was 28-0, and Masco's T.C. Mannetta (8 carries, 117 yards) didn't even let the Scarlet Knights relish the touchdown because he broke a 79-yard touchdown run just 13 seconds later, making it 35-7.

"The D-line did a great job. Everyone did a great job for us," said Reed.

Evan Bunker and Chris Splinter each had an interception for Masco.

The 50-50 jackpot totaled $675, which will come in handy for the winner's Christmas shopping. Or for a few gallons of heating oil this winter.

Masconomet isn't cherishing memories of its preseason scrimmage against Gloucester, which will be its opponent in Tuesday's Division 2A playoffs.

"They kicked our butts | whoa did they ever," said Masco coach Jim Pugh. "That's a real solid team in every way and Paul Ingram and his guys do a great job of coaching."

Reed also remembers it as a tough scrimmage, yet it was meaningless. "That was a long time ago," said Reed.
