An Amesbury football team that opened the season just over two weeks ago with high hopes now finds itself in desperate need of a victory.

The Indians dropped to 0-3 last night with a 34-13 loss to Wilmington. Wildcats quarterback Kyle Moon was 8 for 11 for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Ernie Mello returned after his seven-touchdown effort against Lawrence last week and added two more and 93 yards on the ground. He now had 16 touchdowns on the season.

Amesbury quarterback Jared Flanigan was 4 for 8 for 79 yards and a touchdown. Marion Wilder had 11 carries for 54 yards. Steve Serwon had three receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown.

"We knew we had to pressure them, and that's what we were trying to do," Amesbury coach Thom Connors said. "We had a couple miscoverages throughout the night that killed us. I thought play-for-play we did OK, but we just gave up some big plays. If we could've kept those to a minimum, we would've been back in the game a little bit."

Amesbury's best chance came early in response to a Wilmington score that occurred two plays into the game. Flanigan led a 10-play, 80-yard rive that was capped with a Kevin Johnston 1-yard touchdown run. Flanigan connected on three passes on the drive for 53 yards. Wilder had a 19-yard catch, Jesse Burrell had a 18-yard grab and Serwon had one for 16.

Wilmington responded with two touchdowns before the half to go up 20-6. The Wildcats extended the lead to 34-6 by tallying the first two scores of the second half. Three plays into the fourth quarter, Indians quarterback David Smith threw a 26-yard score to Serwon.

The sledding hasn't been easy for Amesbury thus far. The Indians dropped their opener to Lawrence | a team that improved to 2-1 with a victory over Lynnfield last evening. They then played Pentucket in Week 2 and dropped a heartbreaker, 35-28.

Last night's loss came to a 4-0 squad that is expected to challenged for a Cape Ann League Large title. The good news for Amesbury is that the squad has yet to open its CAL Small schedule, so the losses have not damaged its chances of capturing a league title. The Indians will get a much-needed visit from Lynnfield (0-4) on Friday (7 p.m., Landry Stadium).

Since 2004, Amesbury has a combined record of 2-10 in Weeks 1-3. The Indians are 11-12 in all other games.
