MANCHESTER | Salem's power rushing attack and stout defense proved to be difference makers as the Blue Devils topped Manchester Central, 27-14.

The win clinched a playoff berth for the Blue Devils, who if they lose to West next week, would still qualify on the tie-breaker.

Salem's defense was staunch, holding the Little Green to only 31 total plays on offense for the game. Manchester Central tailback Mike LeClerc was held to 28 yards rushing, while senior quarterback Scott McCurdy struggled to find a rhythm, completing only five of his 16 pass attempts.

"I just told the guys that our secondary coverage was outstanding," said coach Jack Gati, whose son (football) and daughter (track) were former great athletes for the Little Green. "The defense was sound but the offensive line was the key. Our backs ran hard tonight."

The Salem ground game accounted for 277 yards, led by senior fullback James Stewart, who ran for 130 on 21 carries. Kevin Sledge rushed for 71 yards and three scores.

Quarterback Hal Landers only had to throw the ball nine times, but completed six, and also rushed for a score. Gati also noted that his defense held Manchester Central to under 18 points, becoming the first team to accomplish that feat this season.

Manchester Central had an opportunity to remain in the game late in the fourth quarter. But with the ball inside the Salem 5-yard line, the Blue Devils recovered a fumble with 8:18 to play. They then ran out the clock and sealed the victory.
