FOXBOROUGH — The Gloucester football team had their bid for a second straight Division 2A Super Bowl derailed by Duxbury this afternoon. After a back and forth three quarters the Dragons took over the game in the fourth en route to a 46-26 win at Gillette Stadium.

“We had some opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on,” Gloucester head coach Paul Ingram said. “(Duxbury) is a special team, we made it too easy for them and too hard for us.”

Duxbury scored on the first play of the game when Dragons quarterback Sean Cross (4 touchdown passes) hit Ian Whitney with a 69 yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. The Fishermen bounced back with two straight scores of their own from Ross Carlson and Taylor Burbine respectively to take a 14-7 lead.

The Dragons, however, took momentum into the half with 18 straight points in the second quarter to make the score 25-14 at the break.

Gloucester looked to get back into the game in the third when Giacomo Romeo ran 80 yards after the Dragons missed a field goal. Romeo’s score made it 25-20 after three quarters.

But it was all Duxbury from there on in. The Dragons forced three fourth quarter turnovers and put the game out of reach with three straight scores from running back Shane DiBona, tight end Quinn Cully and running back Kyle Gavoni. Gavoni’s score late in the fourth made it 46-20 and ended any chance of a Fishermen comeback.
