REVERE— The Gloucester Fishermen football team has to be happy that there are (at least) four quarters in every game.

For the second straight week, the Fishermen (6-1) came out flat in the first quarter, only to explode for a lopsided win, 30-12, at Revere’s Harry Della Russo Stadium. The game was much more one-sided than the final score would indicate.

Gloucester led 6-0 after the first quarter but opened it up to 24-0 at the half. The lead ballooned to as much as 30 points in the second half before the Fishermen starters took a seat during the last quarter and a half of action.

The victory puts the Fishermen in sole possession of first-place in Northeastern Conference Large with a record of 2-0.

The Patriots are now 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the NEC Large after knocking off Salem (13-6) last weekend.

Signs of another slow start were clear on the Fishermen’s first drive as they fumbled the ball a whopping three times (but recovered it each time) before senior quarterback Rick Gallant was picked off by a Revere defender.

For Gloucester, the unexpected spark came from sophomore running back Gilbert Brown who had a performance that he’ll not soon forget. He scored on three of his first five touches: 36-yard run, 24-yard catch and 11-yard run. By halftime, he had 85 yards rushing on three carries and 40 yards receiving on just two catches.

Brown added his fourth and final touchdown in the third quarter as he dove in from one-yard out. He finished with six carries for 93 yards plus the 40 yards receiving.

Gloucester’s starting defense was relentless as they pitched a shutout before Revere scored two harmless touchdowns in the fourth quarter against backups.

Senior cornerback Dylan Maki, who had two interceptions, was the headliner for a stingy Fishermen defense. Maki opened the scoring in the first quarter by returning his first pick 57-yards for a touchdown.

For the entire first half, Revere could only manage 30 yards and one first down. The Fishermen offense will eventually get off to a better start to begin a game but they couldn’t ask for much more from the defense at this point in the season.

Lynn Classical, a team that should have beaten Gloucester last season, if not for a last-minute miracle comeback, comes to Newell Stadium next Friday (Halloween night) for another NEC Large contest.
