GLOUCESTER— The Gloucester football team (2-0) found out pretty quickly that Masconomet was not the same team that they dominated 39-0 in the Division 2A semifinals last season. The Chieftains (0-3) came out hungry and gave the Fishermen all they could handle last night in their home opener at Newell Stadium.

Although they put up a fight, the Fishermen were still able to hold off the Chieftains in their 20-13 victory.

The Fishermen would break a 7-7 half time tie with eight seconds left in the third quarter when a 56 yard run from Ross Carlson set up Conor Ressel for his second score of the game, a four yard run. A Giacamo Romeo extra point made it 14-7 Gloucester heading into the fourth quarter.

The Chieftains would once again answer right back on their next possession when quarterback Chris Splinter hooked up with Kevin Anderson for a 52-yard score. Masconomet, however, would miss the extra point wide right and the Fishermen would hold on to a one-point lead with 10 minutes to play.

Gloucester would score again on their next possession on Ressel's third touchdown of the game, this time a one yard run. The Fishermen would also miss the extra point to make it 20-13 with 4:56 to play.

Carlson would take the game over from there, intercepting a Splinter pass and then converting a fourth and inches with a minute left to preserve the victory for Gloucester.

Gloucester got on the board first early in the second quarter on a three yard plunge from Ressel. The touchdown drive was set up by a Taylor Burbine interception that started the Fishermen off at the Mascomet 36 yard line.

Masconomet, however, would answer back on their next possession thanks to a couple of Gloucester miscues. The Fishermen had the Chieftains stopped at mid field, but went off-sides on the punt giving Masco new life. After a roughing the passer penalty moved the Chieftains 15 yards closer, half back Evan Bunker hooked up with receiver Anderson on a half back pass to knot the score at seven at the half.

The Fishermen out gained the Chieftains 182-103 in the first half. The Fishermen uncharacteristically had 71 yards rushing and 111 yards passing in the first half. Last week against Winthrop the Fishermen attempted three passes for no yards.
