Haverhill opened the season in style with a win over Malden, but has dropped the last nine straight. The Hillies hope to end the season the way it started with an upset over Lowell.

The Red Raiders are one of the most improved teams in Eastern Mass. They entered last season with high hopes led by QB Matt Welch, who earned a scholarship to UNH. But with Welch battling injuries, Lowell struggled to a 2-9 record and fell to Haverhill on Thanksgiving Day, 28-7. Things looked to be only growing even worse when star running back Jethro Kollie transferred to New Hampton Prep.

But behind the running of halfback Ambruce Carter (925 yards, 11 TDs), the Red Raiders have surged to a 7-3 record, second in the MVC.

The Hillies, on the other hand, have been plagued by injuries. Most difficult to overcome were quarterback Isiah Ocasio, who was lost for the season against Andover, and fullback and leading rusher Danny Triplett (119 carries, 814 yards), who is doubtful for Thanksgiving with an ankle injury.

But Haverhill has hung tough against bigger teams, thanks in large part to the work of running back Noel Figuereo. The senior has rushed for 700 yards on 107 carries for a 6.5 average, and six touchdowns. QB Tim Nutter (four touchdowns) also has big-play potential. They have received stellar blocking from Ben Tufts and Kyle Sullivan, and Evan Pare has been a force at safety.

This is the 11th Turkey Day clash between these two clubs, with Lowell leading 7-3 since they moved to the holiday.
