SALEM, N.H. — There’s more to Timberlane than Derek Furey. A lot more.

As usual, the bruising junior running back broke the century mark on the ground, gaining 117 yards against Salem yesterday while getting 2/3s of the Owls’ carries. But he was just a piece of the puzzle as his teammates stepped up with everything from a disruptive defensive effort to a stellar passing afternoon from Erik Hatton. Put it all together and it added up to a humbling 28-14 non-league setback for the suddenly reeling Blue Devils.

The Owls climb to 4-2 overall with the win while Salem drops to 2-4.

Cohesion and consistency proved to be issues for the Blue Devils all afternoon long especially on offense, balancing off long ground gainers with costly penalties and sacks. Chris Najem (10 carries, 109 yards) and sophomore Max Jacques (14 attempts, 66 yards) looked to be a strong inside-outside tandem for Salem but mistakes did their efforts in.

Penalties sabotaged drives early and late, creating down-and-distance issues that Timberlane feasted on. And when these problems dovetailed with a two-touchdown Owl lead, the Blue Devils were hamstrung.

Forced to pass out of its run-oriented double wing formation, quarterback Matt Cannone was terrorized to the tune of eight sacks and minus-66 yards.

Junior defensive end Ryan Carrigan spent so much time with the quarterback he should be added to Cannone’s MySpace account, coming up with three sacks in addition to his six other tackles. Carrigan also had a fumble recovery that the offense turned into a Luke Ouellette 24-yard first-quarter TD run.

End Jordan Regan notched a pair of sacks while cornerback Ryan Lynch tossed in a 17-yard backbreaker in the first half.

"We know Salem likes to try to pound you and we were able to take it away for the most part," Owls head coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. "We were able to get a good push and Regan was tough off the edge. (First-year coordinator) Mark Pasquini does a great job and I’ve been happy with the defense’s efforts all year."

Offensively the Owls got a nice bonus in Hatton, who hit on 8-of-12 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. His first connection gave Timberlane instant momentum as he threw over Furey’s head and hit Matt Caiazzo for a 52-yard touchdown two minutes into the game.

"We bit on the fake," Blue Devil head coach Jack Gati said as his defense flew to the short receiver and gave Caiazzo lots of room. "We had a lot of mental mistakes and didn’t help ourselves out there."

Salem pulled itself together late in the first half, using a 57-yard drive ended by Jacques’ 8-yard scoring run to close within 12-7, but the Owls owned the second half.

Hatton hooked up with tight end C.J. Dupuis on a 35-yard scoring strike followed by a 2-point conversion with 7:52 left in the third quarter. And early in the fourth, Furey was rewarded for his hard work with a 1-yard TD tote and a 2-point conversion of his own on his last carry of the day.

"I like where we are but we still have to get better," Fitzgerald concluded, looking ahead to next week’s battle with run-oriented Exeter. "We’ve got to be disciplined on defense and tackle."
