WEST NEWBURY — Pentucket defended its home court on Tuesday evening, dispatching Amesbury with a suffocating defense in the second quarter and a flourishing offense in the second half. The result, a 36-point victory as the Sachems toppled the Indians, 78-42.

Leading the way were juniors Peter Cleary and Jake Etter. Cleary led all scorers with 18 points, while adding four assists and a pair of steals. Etter netted 15 points himself and led the way on the glass.

“One of the nice things about our team is we’ve had different guys step up, and tonight it was Cleary and Etter,” said head coach Ed Hickey.

“Both of them had a lot of nice, several different finishes around the rim. Both were pretty aggressive tonight in terms of their looks.”

Classmate Sam Stys also shined on the boards, as Pentucket (13-2) controlled the glass on both ends of the floor.

“We didn’t give up many second-chance points,” Hickey said. “I was really pleased with our rebounding effort tonight.”

While Pentucket held a seven-point advantage entering the second quarter, the Sachems would turn up the pressure on defense, putting the Indians at arm’s length by the end of the half.

Pentucket allowed just one point in the second quarter.

“Kids were rotating hard, closing out,” said Hickey. “The kids really hustled and worked hard.”

Once that second half began, the Sachems took their already 22-point lead and added to it, leaving no doubt with a 23-point explosion in the third quarter.

All but two Sachems scored on the evening.

“I have 13 kids that come to practice everyday working hard,” Hickey said. “This is as deep as I’ve ever been in terms of talent here because there’s kids coming off the bench that could be starting in different years here. I have a bunch of capable players, and they all contributed tonight.”

For Amesbury (4-8), Jaden Keliher recorded a team-high 14 points, 12 in a hot second half.
