Pinkerton withstands North passing game to earn top seed

By J. Tilman Cormier

NASHUA — Pinkerton secured the No. 1 seed throughout the Division I playoffs with a steady, relentless assault on the Nashua North, resulting in a 32-27 victory last night at Stellos Stadium.

Pinkerton will host No. 4 Londonderry in the semifinals on Saturday.

Although Titans quarterback Nicholas Guest hit 12 of 15 passes for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half, the Astros nearly matched it with the outside speed of Matt Mangano (162 yards, 3 touchdowns, and a 50-yard kick return), the bruising inside attack of Chris George (50 yards) and the game control of quarterback Ryan Simpson (62 yards rushing, 35 yards passing).

"I knew I had to step it up," said Mangano, referring to Pinkerton's loss of star running back Eric Giunto for the season due to injury. "Eric's been out before and all of our running backs have come through. The offensive line never gets enough credit."

Down 21-19 at halftime, the Astros decided to become more aggressive against the Titans' one-dimensional air assault.

"We changed our stunts to bring the linebackers up for more pressure on the quarterback," said Pinkerton head coach Brian O'Reilly, "and we told our cornerbacks that once the ball is in the air, it's just as much ours as theirs."

Indeed, key interceptions by George and Jeff Guilherme, who returned his third-quarter pick to Nashua North's 4, was too much for the Titans.

"After halftime I was able to read both the quarterback and the receivers," said George, who also had several booming punts. "On offense we've had two tight ends, Ben Proulx and Zach Tulley, who've stepped into the offensive line and been remarkable."

Proulx was also a force on the defensive line, making several stops in the Titans backfield.
