METHUEN - Right from the opening kickoff, you could tell Central Catholic was locked in.

Maybe it was because junior quarterback Jared Silverio is from Methuen, and he desperately wanted to beat his buddies from back home. Or maybe it was because first place in the MVC Large was on the line.

Either way, the second Shaun Morgan fielded the opening kickoff, the Raiders were out to show everyone that they still run the Merrimack Valley.

Silverio capped off the 9-play, 68-yard opening drive with a beautiful 26-yard touchdown pass to Nick Donatio, and from there the Central Catholic defense stifled Methuen for a 28-6 win Friday night.

The Rangers (4-2) could have won the MVC Large with a win, but were held to just 164 total yards of offense - and 75 of those came on their final drive against mostly backups.

If you're keeping track, that's three convincing wins in a row for the Raiders.

"It feels great," said Silverio, who threw for two touchdowns. "It was a big win for the team.

"I'm from Methuen, so I've played football with a lot of those guys when I was younger. It definitely motivated me. Once we hit the field, that's over, we're not friends anymore. But they're still my boys."

After Central's (4-2) opening drive, Silverio watched as his defense forced two straight three-and-outs. After the second stop gave the Raiders excellent field position, Silverio hit Mark Kassis on a 15-yard screen pass to make it 14-0 after the first quarter.

Linebacker Lewy Baez-Troncoso had another good game, delivering a handful of huge hits, and the Raiders gladly welcomed back safety Joe Howshan, who had been out with a groin injury.

The defense held Methuen, which had six costly penalties on offense, to just 61 yards in the first half.

"We just stayed together as one," said Salem's Donatio, who also had an interception to go along with his touchdown reception. "On defense, we always work together, we're always talking. Everyone was working hard on defense today."

Early in the second quarter, speedster Shaun Morgan broke off a 60-yard punt return that eventually made it a 21-0 game at the half. The Rangers got the ball to start the third quarter with the chance to swing momentum, but three plays in Donatio came up with his interception.

"Defensively we've been playing pretty good," said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos. "I think we have pretty good speed on defense. And the kids up front, they're not the biggest kids but they're doing the job for us."

Howshan added a 13-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to make it 28-0. Methuen avoided the shutout when QB Connor Bryant finished a 17-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard rushing TD.

With the win, Central now stands alone atop the MVC Large.

But after the game, both Silverio and Donatio had just one thing on their minds.

"We just need a hard week of practice and get ready for Haverhill next week," said Silverio.
