TEWKSBURY - The Rhandy Audate era at Lawrence had a rough start, but the Lancers showed enough by the end of their season opener to leave the first-year coach optimistic looking forward.

Defending Division 3 North champion Tewksbury scored twice on its first seven plays from scrimmage as the Redmen handed Lawrence a 35-6 defeat.

"Nothing was different tonight (from being an assistant)," Audate said. "The biggest difference was not being able to get out there on the field and help get the guys motivated. It just didn't happen tonight."

Tewksbury stunned the Lancers on the first play from scrimmage when a back screen from returning MVC All-Star quarterback James Connolly to Shane Aylward went 63 yards for the quick lead.

On their second possession, the Redmen went 70 yards on six plays for a 14-0 lead on a 1-yard Kyle Zervas run.

"I think we missed on a lot of opportunities," Audate said. "I think our guys had a tough time getting settled in and into a rhythm. That's something we're going to work on. We'll go back to the drawing board and get things going."

Lawrence saw its deficit increase to 27 on two more Zervas touchdowns, but the Lancers rebounded with a lengthy fourth-quarter drive.

Brandon Santell hauled in a 5-yard pass from Jacob Tamayo with 4:13 remaining that capped a well-run eight-play, 61-yard drive. Tamayo three times provided first downs on a pair of 16-yard completions to Anthony Alvarez and another of the same distance to Manuel Lara.

Although the Redmen added a fifth touchdown, Tewksbury coach Brian Aylward had only praise for his opening opponent.

"I don't feel good about that last touchdown" said Aylward, in his 22nd year at the Tewksbury helm. "We didn't know how much time was left, but (Audate) was great. He's going to do a good job.

"That whole program to me is scary. He has some good energy and a good report with those guys, and they have some talented guys. If they improve (on their execution), the Lancers are going to win some games. That's a good, hard-nosed team."

Other Lawrence highlights were provided by Anthony Garcia, who made a circus catch in traffic for a 26-yard completion and by punter Eric Sanchez, who twice pinned the Redmen inside the 15, including once at the 4, and added a couple other booming kicks.

"I hope not to use him too much, but Eric definitely does a great job with it and he takes pride in it," Audate said. "But we're hoping not to have to punt too much.

"From here, I think it's just a matter of our guys making more plays and making more turnovers. We need to give ourselves more opportunities to capitalize on them."
