MANCHESTER — Pinkerton junior Meghan Cross started the season slowly, but she may be peaking at just the right time.
Cross finished third overall in the Division 1 state meet at Derryfield Park Saturday, running the rugged 5K course in the rain with a fine time of 19:16.4. That paced the Astros to their fourth straight D1 crownwith 81 points, three better than runner-up Exeter.
Salem's young team finished fifth with 169 points to qualify for next Saturday;s Meet of Champions in Nashua.
Cross wasn't the only Astro to have a terrific day. Freshman Mariesa Preble came in 13th in 20:11.3 just ahead of training partner Ciara April, who was 15th. Another freshman, Riley Sweeney, stepped up with a 22nd place.
For Salem, Bethany Graham was the top freshman in the race, taking ninth in 20:04.2 and classmate Natalie Coryea was close behind in 12th in 20:11.0. Junior Silvia Caddell was 20th.
In the girls Division 2 meet,Coe-Brown finished first with 62 points, followed by Con-Val. Freshman Sophia Reynolds was the individual winner in 18:32.9. Sanborn senior Avery Scully was the top local finisher
