PORTSMOUTH — Two long plays and some clutch defense proved a winning formula for Timberlane Friday night as the Owls held off Portsmouth, 14-7, for their first victory of the season.

Timberlane held a 6-0 lead at halftime thanks to a 56-yard scoring run by Antonio Pallaria in the first quarter. But the extra point failed and the Owls clung to that lead at halftime.

Portsmouth a 7-6 lead midway through the third quarter but the Owls responded right away with a 62-yard pass play from quarterback Dan Hayes to Cam Lovett. Hayes then ran in the conversion points, making it 14-7, and the defense did the rest.

Portsmouth rallied late in the game but Lovett had a key sack and the Owls knocked down a pass at the goal line as time expired. Timberlane had three interceptions on the day, by Shane Johnson, Antonio Pallaria and Sam Tarlin, and Caleb Vlack played a strong game at linebacker.

"Both teams played well defensively and we made the plays when we needed to," said Timberlane coach Kevin Fitzgerald. "Dan Hayes did a nice job buying time on the throw to Cam Lovett."
